Accessibility statement
An honest account of where this site stands, including the parts nobody has tested yet.
Last updated 23 August 2026
What we are claiming, and what we are not
We are not claiming a conformance level. No accessibility audit has been carried out on this site - not an automated scan, not a manual one, and not a test with any assistive technology. Until one has, saying "WCAG 2.2 AA" would be a claim with nothing behind it, and the people who most need that claim to be true are the people it would let down.
What follows is what we have actually built and what we know we have not checked. We would rather publish that than a badge.
What is in place
These are deliberate choices in the code, not assumptions:
- Real HTML. Headings run in order, links are links, buttons are buttons, and the header, footer and main content are proper landmarks. The site works without a mouse.
- The menu is keyboard-operable. The header uses a plain button with an expanded/collapsed state rather than a custom menu widget, which is what lets a screen reader announce it correctly and Escape close it.
- Focus is visible. Every interactive element draws a focus outline; we have not suppressed any of them.
- Colour is never the only signal. Cover colours are chosen from buttons that carry the colour's name and a selected state a screen reader can read, with a tick mark drawn on top rather than colour alone.
- Motion is optional. Every hover and transition is behind a reduced-motion preference, so a system set to reduce motion gets none.
- Images have alternative text. Every image the site renders describes itself, including the engraved preview, which is announced as an image with a description rather than left as an unlabelled canvas.
- Character limits are announced. The engraving fields have a live character counter tied to the field, not floating text beside it.
What we know has not been tested
- Nothing has been tested with a screen reader - not VoiceOver, not NVDA, not JAWS.
- Colour contrast has not been measured. The palette was chosen to look like the product, and no one has put a contrast checker on it.
- There is no skip link. A keyboard user must tab through the header on every page.
- Text resizing and browser zoom have not been checked beyond ordinary responsive layout at phone, tablet and desktop widths.
- The site has one theme. There is no dark or high-contrast mode.
- The personalisation studio is the least tested part, and it is the most interactive: the preview is a visual result, and how well its description substitutes for seeing it is exactly the sort of thing only a real test with a real user answers.
What happens next
An accessibility audit is planned before this shop opens to the public, and this statement will be replaced with its findings - including the failures. If that audit finds something we cannot fix straight away, we will say so here rather than quietly leave it out.
If something does not work for you
Email hello@thecardgenie.com and tell us what happened and what you were using. We will answer, and we will fix what we can. If you need to order and the site is in your way, say so - we would rather take an order by email than lose you to an interface we got wrong.
These terms were drafted in-house and have not been checked by a solicitor. They are the terms this shop actually operates on, and we will honour them. They are not legal advice, and nothing in them reduces the rights the law gives you as a consumer - where they ever conflicted, the law would win, and so would you.
