Terms of sale
What you are agreeing to when you order an engraved notebook from us, and what we are agreeing to in return.
Last updated 23 August 2026
1. Who you are buying from
You are buying from YourNotebook, a trading name of THECARDGENIE.COM LTD, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17299111). Our postal address and contact email are at the foot of this document, and we answer to both.
Where these terms say "we" or "us", they mean that company trading as YourNotebook. Where they say "you", they mean the person placing the order.
2. These terms
These terms apply to every order placed through this site. Please read them before you order - by placing an order you accept them. We may change them, and the version that applies to your order is the version published when you placed it. We keep the date of the last change at the top of this document.
If any single term turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stand.
3. What we supply
We make personalised A5 notebooks with a vegan PU leather cover, engraved by laser in-house in the United Kingdom. Two variants are available:
- Notebook - the engraved notebook on its own, £17.99.
- Gift set - the same engraved notebook, with a pen engraved to match, in a fitted box, £24.99.
Each notebook is made after you order. Nothing is held pre-engraved.
We describe what we have actually verified about the product and deliberately say nothing about the parts we have not yet measured. If a detail matters to your decision, ask us before you order rather than assuming.
4. Placing an order, and when a contract is made
Choosing a design, entering your words, uploading an image if the design takes one and approving the on-screen preview does not by itself create a contract. The contract is made when we confirm your order by email. If we cannot fulfil an order we will tell you and refund you in full.
We may decline an order. The reasons are limited, and all of them are in these terms: we cannot engrave what you asked for (section 6), the words break section 5, or the price shown was obviously wrong.
5. Your words, your images, your responsibility
You choose what we engrave. That means:
- Check your spelling. The preview shows the words you typed. We engrave exactly those words, including any mistake in them. Once the laser has run, the cover cannot be changed.
- You must have the right to use what you send us. Do not upload a photograph or artwork belonging to someone else, and do not ask us to engrave text you do not have permission to use. You keep ownership of what you send us; you give us permission to use it only to make and supply your order, and to keep a copy for as long as our privacy policy says.
- We will not engrave everything. We refuse hate speech, credible threats, sexual content involving children, explicit sexual content and material promoting terrorism. Affection, in-jokes, mild rudeness and swearing between friends are all fine. Text is checked automatically before it reaches the laser; if the check refuses something you believe is harmless, email us and a human will look at it.
If we refuse an order for any of these reasons after you have paid, you get a full refund.
6. What the preview does and does not promise
The preview on screen is generated from the same artwork the laser receives, at the same size, so what you approve is what we cut. Two honest limits:
- Colour and contrast. The engraving is tone-on-tone: the laser lightens the cover rather than adding ink. A screen cannot reproduce that exactly, and the same design reads differently on a light cover than on a dark one.
- Fine detail. Very fine artwork can fall below what a laser resolves in leather. The site checks for this and will refuse artwork it cannot cut cleanly rather than let you buy a blurred cover.
7. Price and payment
The price of the product is shown on the product page. Postage is charged on top and shown separately before you pay: £2.75 for a notebook, £3.49 for a gift set.
We are not registered for VAT, so no VAT is charged and the prices shown contain none. Payment is taken in full when you order - we cannot start engraving before then, because the cover is cut to your words.
Prices can change, but never after you have placed your order. If a price is obviously wrong and you could reasonably have spotted it, we may cancel and refund rather than supply at that price.
8. Delivery
Your order is posted within one working day, and we will email you when it goes out. We cannot commit to a delivery date, because the journey after we hand a parcel over is not ours to promise.
Unless we agree otherwise with you, we will deliver within 30 days of the contract being made - that is the statutory default and we treat it as a backstop, not a target. If we cannot, you may treat the contract as at an end and get your money back.
Risk passes to you when the parcel is delivered to you or to someone you have named. Until then it is ours. See Delivery and returns for what to do if a parcel is late, lost or arrives damaged.
9. Cancelling: what applies and what does not
Personalised: no 14-day change-of-mind return. Your notebook is engraved with your own words after you order, so it cannot be offered to anyone else. Personalised goods are exempt from the 14-day right to cancel (Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, reg 28), and we are telling you before you buy rather than afterwards. Check your spelling on the preview - the engraving is permanent.
This does not affect your legal rights. If your order arrives faulty, damaged, or not what was described, you are entitled to a repair, a replacement or your money back under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and we will put it right - personalised or not.
You can still cancel before we have started engraving. Email us as soon as you can: if we have not yet cut your cover, we will cancel and refund in full.
The full position, including how to return a faulty item, is in Delivery and returns.
10. Our intellectual property, and yours
The designs, templates, artwork, wording and code on this site belong to us. Buying an engraved notebook does not transfer any of that to you - you own the notebook, not the design system that produced it.
What you send us stays yours. We do not use your photograph or your words to advertise, and we do not put them on any other product.
11. Our liability
We do not exclude or limit our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not let us limit - including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Subject to that: we are responsible for loss that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms, and not for loss that is not. We do not supply to businesses, and we are not liable for business losses.
12. Events outside our control
If something genuinely outside our control stops us supplying - a machine failure, a supplier failure, a postal disruption, severe weather - we will tell you and either agree a new date with you or refund you. We will not leave you holding an order we cannot make.
13. Complaints
Email us first: hello@thecardgenie.com. Tell us your order number and what went wrong, and we will answer. If we cannot settle it between us, you can take the matter to the courts described below; we are not currently a member of an alternative dispute resolution scheme.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the United Kingdom you may bring proceedings in your own courts.
15. General
We may transfer these terms to another business if it takes over this shop; you will be told, and your rights will not be reduced. You may not transfer your order to someone else without asking us. Nobody other than you and us has any right to enforce these terms. If we do not insist on something straight away, we have not given up the right to insist on it later.

These terms were drafted in-house and have not been checked by a solicitor. They are the terms this shop actually operates on, and we will honour them. They are not legal advice, and nothing in them reduces the rights the law gives you as a consumer - where they ever conflicted, the law would win, and so would you.
