Swearing and crude jokes are welcome. Attacking people for who they are is not.

What we check
Your words get lasered into leather for good, so we check them before we make anything. That covers the text on every design, the NSFW design, the names on the wedding design (checked before they're drawn), a commission brief and its reference pictures, and any photograph you upload.
Go for it
Swear as strongly as you like: "Best fucking nan in the world" is a lovely present. Be rude about someone you know, with the nicknames, in-jokes and twenty-year insults that are secretly compliments. Dark, sarcastic and soppy are all fine too. The NSFW design says the word in full on your notebook; the black bar is only on our shop window.
Not on our laser
- Attacks on people for who they are: race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, gender, gender identity, disability, nationality. That means slurs aimed at a group, or calls to exclude or hurt them, however politely put.
- Credible threats of violence against a person or a place.
- Any sexual content involving children.
- Explicit sexual content.
- Praise or promotion of terrorism or mass violence.
That's the whole list. When it's close we ask: who are these words aimed at, and what for? At one person you know, however rudely: fine. At a group of people for what they are: no, however mildly.
How we check
We check in two layers, and neither of them is a list of rude words. First a short list of phrases that can only be an attack or a threat, then a check against the rules above, one field at a time (it never sees your photo). If the second layer is down, the first still runs and your order still goes through.
If something is refused
Nothing is engraved and nothing is charged. It happens before you pay, and if it ever happens after, you get every penny back. We do not rewrite your words; we stop and tell you.
The check is software reading one box, so a refusal is not a judgement of you, and the software is occasionally wrong. A person will look at it if you ask: email hello@yournotebook.co.uk with what you were trying to engrave.
We may also decline an order if the words break the rules above, a picture isn't yours to send, or we simply can't engrave it. You'll get a full refund and the reason why. Our terms of sale say the same.
Your stuff has to be yours
Only send photos, drawings, logos or words you're allowed to use, which mostly comes down to copyright. Anyone in your photograph should be happy to be on a notebook (for children, you need to be the one entitled to decide).
What you send stays yours. We use it only to make your order, never to advertise and never on anyone else's notebook, and our privacy policy says how long we keep it.
Threats
If someone tries to engrave a credible threat, we refuse it and keep the order and payment records (we keep those for six years anyway, for tax; see our privacy policy). We'll hand them over on a lawful request from the police.
Received a notebook that threatens you? Report it to the police first, then email hello@yournotebook.co.uk. We cannot tell you who sent it (that's someone else's personal data), but we'll keep what we hold ready for when the police ask.
In an emergency, call 999.
Changes
If these rules change, this page changes and the date at the top moves with it.
